The Swedes were the first to recognize Kierkegaard’s importance, followed by the Germans and the French. The English-speaking world knew virtually nothing about Kierkegaard until 1908, when a book of selections were rendered into English. In the late 1930’s, Walter Lowrie discovered Kierkegaard and together with David Swenson, awakened the English-speaking world to Kierkegaard’s significance. Howard and Edna Hong first translated Kierkegaard’s Journals and Papers into English for which they won the National Book Award in 1968.
